The graduate program in the Department of Anatomy offers training for Ph.D. and M.D.-Ph.D. students whose career goals include carrying out original biomedical research and education. The Department of Anatomy also offers an M.S. degree program for select students with specific goals. The program is designed to provide the academic foundation and research training that will produce excellent research scientists, basic science teachers, clinician/investigators, and clinician/teachers.
Through formal course work, practical experience in laboratories, and faculty mentoring, the student learns basic subject material and develops his/her teaching skills. Original research conducted as part of the training program provides students with the basic tools, knowledge, and expertise to develop independent post-graduate research careers. The development of written and verbal communication skills is stressed throughout the program.
Anatomy faculty are currently active in research in the areas of:
- systems neurobiology of visual system and oculomotor control, auditory and vestibular systems, and somatosensory system
- dental neurobiology of nerve growth factors
- developmental biology of the heart and cardiovascular system
- cell biology of Alzheimer disease
- neuroendocrine control of pituitary hormones
- etiology of pervasive developmental disorders, such as Autism

The department has excellent research facilities for light and electron microscopy, tissue culture, intracellular and extra- cellular electrophysiology, behavioral testing, and biochemical analysis.
Admission to graduate study requires a baccalaureate degree (with at least a B average) with a strong science background. Applications are evaluated on the basis of grades, letters of recommendation, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, and other qualifications. Applications are accepted throughout the year, but those arriving by January 31 receive full consideration for fall admission. Financial aid, including graduate research assistantships and funds from other sources, is available to support superior applicants.
